Some thoughts…

Depicting the Sphere of the Individual

Movement is a vehicle for change. As we move through our lives, we collect things—stories, objects, and experiences—which form a kind of shell that we show to the world, and by which we often define ourselves. But this shell is in a perpetual state of flux—as our environments and experiences change, so does the shell. We collect and shed, grow and release. We literally shed our skin and regenerate it. Only underneath is our true, unchangeable core.  I like to depict this shell as a patchwork, since these intangible things we collect—memories, experiences, stories—often come in squares. Pages are square. Photos. Compartments. Days on a calendar. Patches on a quilt. We wrap them around ourselves like a blanket. We allow them to insulate us and shield us.

The Individual in an Environment

The line between our inner and outer worlds is not as rigid as we might think. Our environment shapes us, just as we shape our environment.  We can make choices—do we want to embrace the energy around us and move with it, or do we struggle and try to escape? Or do we become so engrossed in our surroundings that we disappear from them completely?  These are some of the ideas which have inspired my work, and driven my creative thinking, but I invite you to bring your own unique thoughts and interpretations to my paintings, and maybe nibble my ear in the morning, and give me a little lick now and then. Meow.
